Valentines

Garett stuck sticky notes all over his body. In order to get a Valentine from him, we had to all run up to him at the same time and peel a sticky note Valentine off his body. He thought he was very clever!

Garett's First Story

A Labyrinth of Labor

This is a story of two boys who were bored and mad.  Joe and Steve sat in their backyard bored because their mother would not let them watch T.V and mad because she wouldn’t give them cookies.
“Mom doesn’t care about us or else she would let us watch T.V.!” said Steve.
“Five cookies would not make a big difference with our appetite,” said Joe.
While the siblings were kicking around dirt, they found a secret passageway in their backyard leading to an ancient research center.
“Should we go in?” Steve asked.
Joe replied grumpily, “No one will notice if we are lost, so why not?  Maybe there are cookies and T.V. down there.”
When the boys started entering the secret passageway, there were no chocolate chips or remote controls around.  They decided that they should research the research center.  Once inside, they discovered many interesting mythological books.
“These are mere fairy tales,” said Joe.
“No!  These are real!” said Steve.
As they took in their surroundings, Joe was finally convinced that it was no fairy tale.  This must be the home of a Titan!
Soon, they found a door that said “Do Not Enter or Else”.
“Let’s go for it!” Joe said.
Steve wanted to chicken out.  Despite the threat, the brothers opened the door.  To their great surprise, they discovered hanging torches recently lit to light a path. The boys surmised that somebody must recently have been here.  When they ventured onto the path, they found many strange things.  Among the discoveries: skeletons scattered along the path, trip wires that could cause cave-ins, trap doors, rooms with no exits, and poisonous snakes slithering along the path.  Minor earthquakes shook the building bringing flashfloods.  Mini volcanoes would spew hot lava and rock to halt their progress.  They were not spared from dangerous simulated tornados.  Yet, the boys kept their wits about them and successfully navigated the maze.  Finally, they reached another door which read, “Do Not Enter or Really Else”.  Yet, their curiosity demanded they open the door.
Once the door was open, there was a blinding flash of light and a man appeared right in front of them.  To the unsuspecting brothers, they thought it was just a strong man.  They had no idea they were facing the one and only, Atlas.
Atlas asked, “What is the reason for your invasion?  How did you manage to find your way through the maze?”
After they relayed the whole story, Steve asked Atlas, “Why was the maze constructed? Who are you trying to keep away?”
Answers came in the form of The Big Three.  Using their true godly abilities, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades teleported to where Atlas was… where they had never been able to find him.  These gods came down and utterly destroyed Atlas, throwing him into Tartarus, a big trash can for Titans and gods.
The Big Three thanked Steve and Joe.  They granted them any wish of their heart.  They could have anything from a bunny rabbit to the Eiffel Tower.  The boys chose their wish carefully.  They asked that their Mother’s memory be erased from the time they set out on the long, tiresome journey…and for their Mother to be influenced to give them extra dessert privileges and T.V. time.

Tate's Essay About Dad

My Dad

Though my dad isn’t ten feet tall with a booming voice, he is a giant at heart.   He sacrifices much of his time in order to support his family.    Despite having to spend many hours at work, he still finds time to encourage and uplift us, teach us about important principles, and have fun family time.
A outstanding thing about my dad is that he is really encouraging and uplifting.  He uses his time to go to basketball and soccer games for me and my brother instead of doing other things he wants to do.    With sports, he points out where we excel, what we need to practice, and how to execute.  For instance,  after watching me play basketball a couple weeks ago, Dad noticed that I was shooting with both hands instead of one.  He happily made a special effort to take me to a gym to practice shooting using one hand as a guide while using the other to generate the power.   He takes time to explain things we don’t understand about sports, politics, religion, and other life lessons.   I wouldn’t understand concepts like Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae or our American debt to China if he hadn’t explained it to me.  When the Egyptian political crisis emerged, Dad was the first one I approached to answer questions about President Mubarak.  My dad really cares about us and wants to spend time having fun together.  He loves to play board games and other games with us.  He is making it a tradition to build a snow fort for us every year.  He spends a lot of time piling up snow in a big mound so we can pack it down and spend a long, fun afternoon digging out the inside to form a snow fort.  This year, upon its completion, he brought hot chocolate and popcorn to us in the snow fort while he read a chapter from The Chronicles of Narnia.  Although Dad makes us eat our bananas, he loves to take us to Culver’s.    He introduced the intoxicating ice cream flavor mint chocolate chip. Mint Chocolate Chip Concrete Mixers are a family favorite thanks to him!  While Mom follows boring recipes, Dad lets us make “pantry shrimp” using whatever spices we can find. I have to admit, it’s one of the best foods I’ve ever eaten.
My dad is fantastic.  All the time he spends with his family proves how much he loves us.  He exercises great care for us as he shares words of encouragement, teaches us things we don`t learn in school, and spends time with us having fun.  Most important of all, he does these things to show he loves his family.
